13 Reasons Why EVERYONE Should Watch ’13 Reasons Why’!

’13 Reasons Why’ is breaking the internet with its outstanding performance on Netflix.

I knew that Selena Gomez was the executive producer of the film and I loved her work which is the sole purpose of why I started watching it. Even though I didn’t think the show was my interest in genre, I still wanted to see it. After the first couple of episodes, I knew that this wasn’t any other teenage drama series. This film told stories that were raw, honest, and brutal. Some parts are a lot to take in, were traumatizing, and were not easy to watch. And that’s what made this show different.

I personally think that “13 reasons why” is by far one of the most honest films in our society today because it opens up issues that people are afraid to talk about.

The thing that stuck out to me the most about this film was that the writers didn’t hold back one bit. The story kept getting darker and darker until you felt as broken as the characters in the film. You felt their pain while learning about each individual and their struggles.

I thought it was original that the film showed everything and didn’t hide the important parts. The brutal scenes weren’t sugarcoated which is what films usually do to avoid making viewers feel uncomfortable.

Thirteen Reasons Why EVERYONE NEEDS TO SEE ’13 reasons why’ video:

  1. The importance of opening up. People think the point of the film was only to show that bullying is bad, and that they shouldn’t do it, but that’s not the only point. The most important point that is brought up throughout the show is the importance behind opening up about your problems and shining some light into your darkness. The show illustrates how it can utterly ruin someone’s soul when they don’t open up. Hannah, the main character who commits suicide, shows how hiding your brokenness can only worsen the pain.
  2. It shows us what depression and emptiness looks like. Some people don’t realize what it’s like to feel empty or to be depressed but by watching Hannah’s life, you start to feel exactly what she feels. It allows you to see what depression looks like and what it can potentially lead to. The important part is being able to understand people who are depressed. Sometimes understanding people with depression can help them feel less lonely and more sane because they don’t understand themselves and when someone else does, that can feel incredibly relieving. Personally, while watching this film, I felt so much pain and heartbreak for everyone and anyone in this world who felt the same way Hannah did. Depression. Loneliness. Emptiness. Feeling Lost. Feeling Nothing.
  3. You understand why people don’t cry for help. As you get closer to finishing the season, each episode gets more darker, and you start to see Hannah show less emotion as if she feels nothing. Feeling “nothing”? What’s that possibly like? Hannah, describes and shows the feeling of “nothing” perfectly. This film also describes how brokenness looks like. A broken soul wants help but won’t show their brokenness. And worse, broken people try telling you they don’t want your help. But that’s not at all the case. The truth is that they want you to help them and not help them at the same time. You see, broken people don’t want to ask for help because they either don’t want to in the moment, or feel too weak to ask or try.
  4. To help put a stop to bullying. Bullying is wrong in all forms and can seem almost impossible to put a stop to. I feel like this will have a strong impact on our younger generation to think twice before hurting someone emotionally/physically. Instead of spreading hate, I hope it changes the way we treat one another. The film is not entirely about ending bullying which you will see by reading further along.
  5. Cyberbullying. To add to the concept of bullying, social media has become the number one way teenagers communicate with or without each other. And if someone is receiving hate from their number one source of communication, it can crush us and get very lonely. Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, etc, have become our main platforms. If we delete or unfriend anyone on facebook, it basically means were deleting them from our life. Social media is so common and familiar to us that it’s become our home. Now that the internet has been booming since the last decade, so has cyberbullying. Cyberbullying seems more approachable to people than bullying to someone’s face. Social media is where you’re simply behind a computer screen, so it becomes incredibly easy to tear down someone’s mood with a couple of hate comments.
  6. A small problem can turn into a life-changing effect. I won’t be giving any spoilers away, but you’ll notice how some things may not seem like a big deal in the beginning but will leave the biggest effect on everyone’s lives.
  7. The power of kindness. I hope that after watching this show, people realize the impact of spreading love and kindness. Simply just being there for someone, understanding them, or asking how they’re doing can do more good than you think.
  8. The importance of unity. Clay starts to realize how important it is for people to be there for one another and to have each other’s back. He constantly contemplates that the lack of unity is why people feel so alone and empty inside.
  9. It’s Raw and Honest which is very uncommon in the film industry. Suicide, rape, and abuse can seem like just a word to us, but after seeing it happen in one take, will make you feel more than uncomfortable and heart broken. The film makes you feel like you are right there in the middle of the trauma. While watching the brutal scenes of rape and suicide, you feel helpless. Movies usually switch from one clip to another to make a full scene seem less awkward. However, in ‘Thirteen Reasons Why’, you notice that in the most horrific scenes, the writers want you to feel uncomfortable because suicide, rape, and abuse shouldn’t be subjects to be brushed away like it’s nothing. Instead, this show takes that into consideration and shows you the torment of suicide, rape and so much more.
  10. This film attacks every single struggle and issue young adults witness and go through. This show beautifully illustrates every single character’s life and challenges. Some challenges may not seem like a big deal to you, but can have the strongest effect on one’s soul. I think this is where adults should see this film because even our parents can have a tough time in understanding our feelings and emotions. Although our feelings may be hormonal and temporary, it’s crucial that older adults to still take our feelings seriously and into consideration. This will help younger adults feel less lonely and more secure. Especially since high school feels like the end of the world to us, but having our parents brush our problems away because of hormones can leave a worse effect than intended. You will see how clueless and indifferent the parents feel towards their children. For example, Hannah’s parents go through financial difficulties which blind them from seeing Hannah’s pain. Parents, it’s important for you to SEE and UNDERSTAND your children for whatever they’re feeling. Don’t make them feel like their feelings are unimportant.
  11. No matter what your genre preference is, this show is a must-see for everyone because it tackles issues we don’t realize the gravity and delicacy of. This film focuses our attention to problems we may not fully understand and will help change our perspective for the better while allowing us to understand human behavior.
  12. Best Teenage Drama Film. By far, this is the greatest teenage drama film I have ever seen due to its abundance in problematic issues associated in high school and how every single character has a problem that is commonly faced in our own lives! We feel like we can truly relate with the characters of this film since it’s so real and hits home for some of us!
  13. Suicide should never be a choice. There are a lot of articles out there saying how the show “glorifies” and encourages suicide but that’s just not the case at all. Although it was Hannah’s choice to commit suicide, it is important to know that suicide is never the option. If you are feeling suicidal, go to 13reasonswhy.info and text or call for help or just to talk to someone.

’13 Reasons Why’ was definitely one of the hardest series to watch but it was worth it and I hope you take the chance to watch the series after reading these thirteen reasons.
