Why “New Year’s Resolution” Is A Mistake

New Year’s Day is approaching us this week. I better start setting goals for the upcoming year. Wait.. have I even fulfilled any of my resolutions from last year? I remember always having to tell my friends that my New Year’s Resolution was to follow the same resolutions and goals that I set the previous year because I never accomplished them!

Most of us are guilty of making a New Year’s Resolution and giving up within the first month.  And if you’re like me, you never even try taking the first step. What if I told you that setting a New Year’s Resolution was a mistake to begin with? Why are you waiting until next year to start a new goal for yourself? Why can’t you just start now. Same thing goes for setting a goal for your tomorrow. Why can’t you just start today?

If you want a goal that you will honestly be committed to fulfilling, then set it for today. (Bad Example, Exhibit A: Camelia Katoozian) There have been so many times that I told myself that I would go to the gym tomorrow, when in reality I chose to lay in bed and watch Netflix. If I had chosen to go for a run that very moment, I took a step towards commitment. Whereas saying “Oh, I’ll just do that tomorrow” is basically another way of saying “Oh, I’m lazy right now and I don’t feel like it”.

On the other hand, there are Good Examples out there, Like Exhibit B: Sami Baghban. After watching a motivational video regarding FouseyTube’s weight, Sami was so inspired that right then and there, he decided to work on his weight and go for a run. Even though it was in the middle of the night when he watched that video, that didn’t stop him. It took him 6 months to lose 55 pounds. It took just one moment and one day to change his whole health & lifestyle.

Why can’t we all just decide something for our life today? Why are we so fixated on this New Year’s Resolution crap? I think it’s just a made up societal conspiracy that leaves people behind in chasing their dreams & goals. Okay, that was dramatic but I really don’t see the point behind New Year’s Resolution because it seems like it just sets people up for failure.

Be different and the “odd person out” of societal norms. Instead of setting a “New Year’s” Resolution, proclaim a “today” resolution. Make your today better than your yesterday. Live everyday as if it were your last. Choose to be happy with yourself today in order to be happy with yourself in the future while you fulfill the goals you set.

So stop telling me your New Year’s Resolution and stop setting them. Set a goal for yourself TODAY in order to commit to it for the future.

So what’s your New Year’s Resolution? Trick question.
